Context
Utah Valley Quilting is a brick and mortar quilting shop that approached me to build an informational website for their customers. The website serves as a reference point for customers to access order forms, quilt preparation instructions, and long-arm quilting options.
Research
The target audience for this site are the customers and potential customers of Utah Valley Quilting. Most of these customers are female within a broad age range. Interviewing the current site users showed that the most used feature of the website was access to the quilting order form. Information about quilt preparation and quilting choices were next in use. Kerrie the owner asked that we also display the quilting turn around time as that is one of the most frequent questions she receives calls about.
Design and Development
Site Flow & Wireframes
Given this information I then created the following site flow and wireframes. Placing the two most used pieces of information in the most visible areas of the screen. Links were then placed in areas of priority according to how much they were reported to be used during the research process.
Mood Board
I also created a mood board to summarize the design styles that would be applied to the website. Quilting customers have put many hours of work into their quilts and are entrusting their creation to Utah Valley Quilting for a polished finish. Traditional colors were chosen to portray trust and comfort. I wanted to keep a clean professional look while also including design details that would appeal to the quilting and crafting community.
Development
We chose to build the website using WordPress as the CMS so that the store employees could easily help maintain and update content on the site. I used a highly customizable theme and added CSS as needed to achieve the design.
Reflection
The site has been very successful. Customers have been very pleased with the design and the ease with which they find the information they are looking for. The employees of Utah Valley Quilting find the site maintainable and easy to keep updated. To explore the full site go to Utah Valley Quilting.
